Facing federal indictments for fraud, Dennis Oury resigned as attorney for the Edgewater Board of Adjustments.
Adjustment Board Chairman Robert Christiansen announced at the Oct. 1 meeting that Oury sent a letter stating that the allegations are unfounded but it has become a distraction to the business operations of the municipalities that his law firm represents so he resigns effective immediately.
Christiansen said that since the year is almost over he recommended appointing Robert Montecallo, an attorney who serves in the same position in Cliffside Park, to replace Oury.
"We’ve used him in the past for some applications," Christiansen said.
Adjustment Board members approved Montecallo’s appointment and he will serve until the end of the year.
The eight-count indictment charged Bergen County Democratic Chairman Joseph Ferriero and Oury with conspiring to defraud Bergenfield of the right to Oury’s honest services as borough attorney and mail fraud.
The two are charged with concealing their interest in a private consulting firm, Government Grants Consulting LLC, while using their influence with local, county and state officials to steer tens of thousands of dollars from Bergen County towns into the company’s coffers.
Oury and Ferriero’s attorneys denied the charges.
