Voters approve school budget

(by Sam Passow - April 23, 2008)

Incumbents Thomas Quinton and Irene Pynn were re-elected in an unopposed school board race April 15.

Quinton and Pynn had 129 and 114 votes, respectively. Voters approved the school district’s proposed $11.7 million tax levy 105 to 39.

The total anticipated budget for the district is $14.3 million, a 1.6 percent increase from last year’s final total of $14.1 million. The portion of the budget that will be raised from taxes increased by about $255,000 from last year.

The Board credits the borough’s property re-evaluation and a growing tax base with helping the taxes go down this year. The tax levy per $100 of assessed value is 37 cents, down 64 cents from last year’s amount of $1.02. The average cost per home assessed at $213,700 last year paid about $2,184. But this year the average home is assessed at $573,000 and the cost would be $2,157.
