Three Leonia High School art students have work featured in a Morristown museum this spring as part of the Fresh Perspectives art show.

Advanced Ceramics students Leart Sapunxhiu and Betsy Ko and art student Frances Gah-Young were selected from 441 statewide submissions.

Sapunxhiu described his ceramic work as an abstract piece with three pyramids with an earth tone glaze.

"It has an antique feel," he said.

It’s titled "Le Art," as a play on his name and French for "The Art."

The senior is planning to attend New Jersey Institute of Technology to study networking for computers and music.

His teacher Sheila Racz said his engineering focus showed in his piece.

"It had a very architectural feel to it," Racz said. "The angles were very precise."

Gah-Young Lee put together a red pepper collage.

"It was a final exam for art class and I just put it together really fast," she said.

But Racz said Lee put it together "really fast and really well."

Lee’s art teacher Katharine Philip called the junior a very talented young artist.

"A lot of kids think they want to bypass the beginning art classes but this shows what she could do with the beginning course," Philip said. "With creativity you can take any assignment to any ability level or conceptual level."

Ko said she put together a vase collection with different forms and sizes.

"I was making them look like a flower blooming," she said.

She concentrated on using "earthy tones" in her pieces.

"I go to that more than normal colors like just a red," she said.

Ko, a junior, said she hasn’t really decided what she wants to do in the future but is encouraged by being chosen for the museum.

"Being able to show it and having been selected for the exhibit, it’s a great honor," Ko said.

Racz said the school is represented in the show almost every year.

"It’s highly competitive," she said. "The fact that we have more than one student says a lot about the school."

She said art is, by nature, very subjective so some years they feel confident that something will be accepted and then they see some other style of art chosen.

"This year seemed to highlight digital photography," Philip said. "So to get ceramics and a collage in was very hard."

Racz agreed and said her students’ dedication to the craft is very important to their success.

"They’re fanatical down to the finishing touches," she said.

"I wish I could clone them," Racz said. "It would make my job much easier."

The show runs until June 8.
