Two cell phone applications on zoning board agenda

(by Sam Passow - July 09, 2008)

The Borough’s Board of Adjustment has five items scheduled for a hearing on its July 16 meeting agenda, including two from cell phone companies.

There are requests to convert a Lasher Lane home into a three-family dwelling, to expand an existing improvement without increasing the number of units on Undercliff Avenue, and to build seven townhouses on Undercliff Avenue.

Omnipoint Communications, also known as T-Mobile, has applied for a variance request to install six antennas on a building located at 1375 River Road.

Only four areas of the borough allow telecommunication facilities so a use variance is needed. The building is located on the northern end of River Road near Orchard Street.

The other application is from New Cingular Wireless and comes after the Board’s denial was reversed in court.

New Cingular Wireless was first scheduled to go before the zoning board in late 2005. Its application requested permission for 16 antennas and a federally mandated GPS-911 antenna on a building located at 410 River Road. It included variance requests for use, height, and front and rear yard setbacks.

The application with a request for 14 antennas was heard and ruled on earlier this year. The zoning board denied the application at a March 21 meeting. But after the court’s reversal of the decision, New Cingular Wireless will go before the board again with its application.

The meeting will be July 16 at 7 p.m. in Borough Hall. Depending on time constraints or other conflicts, items on the agenda may be carried over to the next month’s meeting Aug. 6.
