Budget gets closer to being introduced

(by Sam Passow - July 30, 2008)

The Mayor and Council continue to prepare the 2008-2009 fiscal year budget.

Borough Administrator Gregory Franz said he is anticipates the budget being introduced in September. The Mayor and Council will then adopt it by November or December, after a public hearing.

"We’ve started the process and had the major departments present their operating budgets," he said.

After those presentations in June, the numbers have been put in the borough’s budget worksheet, Franz said.

"We’ll hopefully be able to distribute a first draft of that to the mayor and council and then we’ll discuss capital projects and salary and wages," Franz said.

While it’s too soon for an estimate on the total budget projections, Franz said the operating budget requests were mostly flat, with no significant increases.

"The department heads have been very good in keeping requests the same or similar," he said. "So for now there are no significant increases."

He said the council will review every line item and fine tune the requests. Franz said there could still be some changes, but he isn’t expecting anything significant.

Once the budget is officially introduced the public can view it. The mayor and council then hold a public hearing for input before they vote to adopt it.
